Figs come from the plant Genus group ‘Ficus’. The Ficus family is enormous, with hundreds of varieties around the world. The most common to be eaten is the ‘Ficus Carica’, named after Caria in ancient Turkey. Figs originate from the Asia minor but have been cultivated throughout Mediterranean regions and many other parts of the world. Greek and Roman civilizations loved figs so much that the fruit influenced the invasion of Greece by the Roman General Xerxes. Ancient Egyptian royalty also adored figs and it was one of the foods served at royal banquets.
