– Lungs – Mullien has been used for many centuries as a lung cleanser, to reduce and expel excess mucus from the lungs and to help with symptoms of cardiovascular issues like the cough, cold and common flu.

Mullein, Verbascum Thapsus, is a plant that has made its way all over the world. The great Mullein or common Mullein is a species of Mullein native to Europe, Northern Africa, Asia, America and Australia. It is a hairy biennial plant that can grow to 2m tall or more. Mullein is often prepared as a soothing tea or tonic for the respiratory system and to reduce inflammation. Mullein has been used medicinally for a long time. Dioscorides (64 AD) recorded it as useful for constipation, ruptures, convulsions, old coughs, toothaches, inflammations of the eyes, wounds and scorpion-stings. See herb profile for more.

How to use

Mullien can be made into a herbal infusion (tea).
To make a tea:
1. Use a ratio of 2-3 tsp (2-3g) of Mullien to 1 cup (250ml) of water.
2. Boil the water using a kettle or pot.
3. Add herbs to a teapot then add boiled water or add herbs to a pot of boiled water (heat switched off).
4. Cover and allow to sit for 5-10 mins then strain and serve. Have 2-3 cups daily.
5. You can add citrus and natural sweeteners for extra flavour, we do not recommend sugar.

Mullein is an expectorant, which means it helps the body expel excess mucus, It works by making your coughs more productive, to bring up mucus that may be settling in the chest or in the throat.

Mullien is also a demulcent. Studies show that demulcents create a soothing anti-inflammatory coating over mucous membranes. Demulcents contain a higher amount of mucilage than other plants.

Both qualities make it useful for soothing irritation of the lungs, throat, and bronchial passages that may lead to difficulty breathing.
