Eyebright (Euphrasiae officinalis L) gets its name from from the fact the flowers are thought to resemble a healthy eye, according to the Doctrine of Signatures (The Doctrine of Signatures, dating from the time of Dioscorides and Galen, states that herbs resembling various parts of the body can be used by herbalists to treat that body part, this is NOT an exact science but the theory of the time). The botanical name is derived from the Greek word euphrosyne, meaning gladness.

Conclusion of study: We show that the ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts of E. officinalis L. can be satisfactorily used as a supplemental therapy in human corneal disorders. The heptane extract should not be recommended. Generally, one should strive to standardize herbal medicines which are used in ocular ailment therapies, mainly through decreasing their toxic side effects and demonstrating their safety for patients.
